Festivals of South India
Festivals have always been an integral part of Indian culture and many of these festivals are celebrated in unique styles and fashions in the various parts of the country. Southern India covers states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The southern states follow the Dravidian tradition and celebrate their festivals in their own unique ways. The population of South India is an eclectic mix of Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Despite the various religious influences in the region, the South Indians celebrate many festivals with equal enthusiasm. The extent of celebrations is such that the region remains colorful all through the year, with several religious and regional festivals taking place. Mysore in Karnataka is known for its Dussehra celebration, while Tamil Nadu is famous for the Pongal Festival. On the other hand Andhra Pradesh celebrates the annual harvesting festival of Makar Sankranti in its own unique way.
